edward george earl bulwer-lytton 'ın 1830 yılında yazdığı paul clifford'ın açılış cümlesi. roman kendi zamanında başarılı olmuş olsa da, günümüzde abartılı anlatımı ve gereksiz uzatmaları sebebiyle "kitch"in edebiyattaki sembolü kabul edilmekte. (gecenin karanlık olmamak gibi bir şansı mı var, vesaire)

bol gönderme yapılan bu cümleyi asıl ünlendiren peanuts sayılır. snoopy kulübesinin üstünde daktilosuna her sarıldığında bu cümlenin türevleriyle başlayan romanlar yazar:

klişe avcısı terry pratchett da affetmez tabi bu deyimi: good omens'in ilk bölümü "it was going to be a dark and stormy night." diye biter, ikinci bölümü ise "it wasn't a dark and stormy night. it should have been, but there's the weather for you." der.
