"okuma günlüğü" kitabında "arjantin bitti. ama onu bitiren piçler hâlâ yaşıyor" diyen kanada vatandaşı arjantinli yazar. arjantin (buenos aires) dışında, israil, fransa, italya ve ingiltere'de de yaşamış. çok dillilik, çok kültürlülük kavramlarına örnek verilebilecek canlı bir mikro-organizma.yazarlığının yanı başında, çok dile hakim bir çevirmen, antoloji yazarı ve editör olarak da ün kazanmıştır. alberto manguel'in literatürde en çok tanınan eseri kuşkusuz hayali yerler sözlüğü'dür. öte yandan, okumanın tarihi adını taşıyan kitabı, otuzdan fazla dile çevrilerek beğeni toplamıştır.

okumanın tarihi isimli kitabının ön sözünü orhan pamuk'un sessiz ev'inden bir alıntıyla bitirir. içeriği geniş, zaman sırasından bağımsız hareket eden, ilginç ve faydalı bir kitaptı, sayfalarca not almıştım. beni etkileyen en önemli yanı ise yazarın edebi dünyadaki inanılmaz çevresi ve birikimi olmuştu, okurken ezildiğimi hissediyordum.

söyleşisinde artık çocukların (ve gençlerin) kitaplardan pasajlar ezberlemediklerinden, güncel eğitim sistemlerinde de bu şekilde ezberlemeye karşı bir tavır olduğundan bahsederek "çocukların kafasındaki sanal kütüphaneyi yok ettik" dedi. ne kadar haklı! annemin kuşağı hala yeri geldiğinde baki'den, fuzuli'den iki üç mısra mırıldanıverir. ben de çok sıkışırsam cem yılmaz'dan bir şeyler mırıldanabiliyorum...çocukken okunan metinler üzerine inşa edilen binanın temelleri sayılır, o yüzden en çok etkilendiğimiz, bizi şekillendiren metinlerdir. tıpkı müzikte olduğu gibi, bu metinlerle ne kadar yakından ilişki kurulursa, o kadar geniş bir yere yayılırlar zihnimizde. i-pad kuşağının acaba bu kadar yakınlaşacağı metinler olacak mı? yoksa melali anlamayan bir nesil mi geliyor?

söyleşinin en önemli kısmı sansüre yönelik söyledikleriydi manguel'in. kütüphanelerin de sansüre bağlı kaldığı bir yanı olduğuna atıf yaptı manguel. yani bir kütüphaneci var ve kütüphanede onun seçtiği kitaplar vardır. ayrıca iskenderiye kütüphanesine atıfta bulunarak; çok fazla bilginin doğru bilgiye ulaşma ihtimalini azalttığını savundu. umberto eco'nun benzer biçimde düşündüğünü biliyoruz.güzel bir söyleşiydi, kar kışa rağmen hem eğlendik hem öğrendik. ayrıca manguel, borges hususunda hiç rahatsız değil. yani öyle bir öğretmenin gölgesi altında kalmak insana onur vermeli, kıskançlığa düşürmemeli. keza bizler akademisyenlerimizin yanına gittiğimizde, her defasında 'çabuk çabuk, işim var.' gibi tepkilerle karşılaştığımızı düşündüğümde, yetkin bir öğretmenin, ülkemizde ifade ettiğinden çok daha önemli bir özveriyle öğrencilerine katkı sağladığını düşünmekteyim.

reading pictures- a history of love and hate isimli bir kitabi da vardir ki, en az a history of reading kadar iyi ve detaylarla bezelidir. bana kalirsa bu iki kitap da okumayi ve genel anlamda sanati seven birilerine verilebilecek en guzel hediyelerdendir. ayrica (bkz: tina modotti)
