sözlük anlamı "çaresiz, umutsuz vb" olsa da türkçe'de tersi bir anlama gelebilen çetrefilli bir sözcük. çoğu çevirmen bu kelimeye rasladığında hataya düşmektedir bu yüzden. çünkü desperate kelimesi çaresizden ziyade "kaybedecek hiç bir şeyi olmayacak kadar çaresiz" demektir. bu yüzden misal bir savaş tarihi yazısında "a desperate defense" tanımı "çaresiz bir müdafaa" değil, "ölümüne müdafaa" ve hatta yazının milliyetçilik goygoyu ve epik bağlamına göre "kahramanca bir savunma" gibi anlamlara gelebilmektedir..
